MICHAEL SPITZ, L.C.S.W.

Michael Spitz is a licensed clinical social worker who completed his MSW at Loyola University in Chicago. He has been licensed since 2008 and has been working in the field since 1999. His specialty is in psychotherapy with children, teenagers and families. He is currently a full time clinical social worker in Outpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Hospital in Torrance, California. Previously he worked as a psychotherapist at Los Angeles Child Guidance where he provided individual and family counseling in an outpatient setting and in the public schools. After graduation from Loyola, Michael worked in a residential treatment center in Chicago. There he counseled and led groups for teenage boys who, after being placed there by probation or coming from juvenile detention, were struggling with substance use and other conduct delinquency issues.

Michael has training in CBT for anxiety, depression and trauma, and with children he has used non-directive play therapy. His approach can incorporate cognitive/behavioral and/or psychodynamic and self-psychology based modalities. Disorders he has treated include Major Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Schizophrenia when working closely with the psychiatrist.

Michael has a strong interest and background in the arts, including photography, theater, filmmaking and writing. He is familiar with the art world, and he enjoys working with creative and artistic individuals. He often incorporates journaling, expressive writing, and art activities in his work. He has led photo therapy groups for teenagers, using photography as a therapeutic tool for self-expression and exploration. He has his own meditation practice which he finds helpful in guiding clients through relaxation, stress reduction, and having more control over their thoughts. Michael looks forward to bringing his experience, skills and interests to helping patients through Family Therapeutics.
